Lawrencium was discovered in 1961 by Ghiorso and co-workers in California. The most stable
form of lawrencium has a half life of only thirty-five seconds. It is the last member of the actinide
series to be discovered. Few applications of this element and its compounds are known. It is
named after Ernest O. Lawrence, who invented the cyclotron.
