Trypanosome
Members of the genus Trypanosoma live as parasites in the blood of
fish, birds and mammals, and many Trypanosomes need a second host species
for part of their life cycle. In parts of Africa, Trypanosoma
gambiense and Trypanosoma rhodesiense cause sleeping sickness in
people, and the tsetse fly acts as the alternate host. A person can catch
the disease when bitten by an infected fly. Leeches act as secondary hosts
for some species of Trypanosoma. Chaga's disease in humans and
nagana in cattle are two more diseases caused by Trypanosomes.
