Plasmodium
Several species of Plasmodium are blood parasites that cause
malaria. Like many other parasitic Protozoa, Plasmodium needs a second
host to complete its life cycle, and the malaria parasite is transmitted by
Anopheles mosquitos. When an infected female mosquito bites
someone, she injects tiny parasites into the victim's blood. These
"sporozoites" migrate to the liver and later infect red blood cells.
Inside a blood cell, the Plasmodium divides to form 12 or 24 new parasites
which burst from the cell and find new blood cells to infect. Poisons
released from bursting blood cells cause fever and chills in the person
suffering from malaria.
