Horsetails
The Horsetails are an ancient group of plants that
probably evolved from Psilophyte ancestors. They
developed water-conducting tubes and rigid
supporting tissues which made it possible for some
species to reach a great size. With the Clubmosses and
now-extinct Lepidodendrons, they made vast jungles of
plant life which is today fossilised as coal. Only
one genus of horsetails remains but its species are
widespread mostly in the northern hemisphere.
