Class Gymnospermae
The seed plants fall into two major groups. First to
evolve about 345
million years ago were the Gymnosperms. "Gymnosperm"
means "naked seed" and
the seeds of these plants are not encased in an ovary,
unlike those of
"Angiosperms". Coniferous trees belong to the
Gymnospermae. When the
scales of a pine cone separate you can see that the
seeds inside are open to
the air.
