Eastern White Cedar Thuja occidentalis the tree of life, was recommended to Jacques Cartier by kindly Indian people as a cure for the scurvy that was plaguing his men. It is also a popular food item for several species of wildlife. This tree has scale-like leaves that are flattened close to the stem. It likes to grow in swampy areas where its somewhat twisted trunks and fibrous bark are quite easy to recognise. [CH] {NT}
