Western Hemlock
Western Hemlock Tsuga heterophylla is a tree of the coastal regions
of western North America where it is a dominant species. The top of the
leading stem droops over giving the tree a graceful appearance. The flat
blunt-tipped leaves are of different lengths on the same twig and this is the
origin of the name heterophylla (different leaves). The underside of
each needle has whitish bands on either side of the midvein.
