Eastern Hemlock
Eastern Hemlock Tsuga canadensis has spreading branches that shade
the ground and keep off much of the snow, so deer like to shelter under
stands of hemlock in the winter time. Its short needles are flattened in
shape and have whitish stripes on either side of the midrib on the
undersurface. It has small cones which shed their seeds in the winter and
remain on the tree until spring.
