Coast Redwood
Coast Redwood Sequoia sempervirens grows on the west coast of the
United States from Monterey to Oregon. It is one of the tallest trees in
the world reaching up to 100 metres and its strong reddish-brown wood is an
important source of lumber. Sequoia is a very ancient genus with fossil
evidence suggesting that it flourished 150 million years ago. This great
tree was named for the Cherokee chief Sequoya who designed an alphabet of
eighty-five characters for his tribal language.
