Branch tip of Balsam Fir Balsam Fir Abies balsamea looks like a church steeple in shape and is often used as a Christmas tree. Its bark has little blisters of scented resin that was once used as a sort of chewing gum and porcupine appreciate its taste. Its narrow leaves are whitish underneath and its cones grow upright from the branches. The wood is often sold as "spruce" or used as woodpulp. [CH] {NT}
