Banana Musa paradisiaca is not really a tree but a large plant that
sprouts up from an underground stem each year. It can grow to nine metres
in height and it has large leaves that tend to tear along the veins when the
wind blows. Clusters of male and female flowers eventually form bunches of
bananas.
Pieces of the underground stems are used to grow new plants as the fruit of
cultivated bananas is sterile.
