Family Sparganiaceae
Bur-reeds Sparganium grow in shallow water around
the margins of ponds. There are about 15 species which
grow in most parts of the world except Africa and South
America. They grow up from creeping stems (rhizomes)
producing long narrow upright or floating leaves. The
flowering stem has little round clumps of flowers at
intervals, the lower heads consisting of female flowers
and the ones higher up the stem having pollen-producing
flowers.
