Evolution of Monocotyledons

Present-day Monocotyledons probably evolved from water plants which in turn evolved from a Dicotyledon similar to the modern Waterlilies. The flowers of these aquatic plants indicate that their ancestors were land plants, and it is likely that Dicotyledons appeared on the scene before the line leading to the Monocotyledons branched off.
