Indian Cucumber-root
Indian Cucumber-root Medeola virginiana is a spring
flower of North America's eastern woods. The slender
stem has leaves arranged in two distinct whorls and the
yellowish flowers dangle from its tip. At the end of the
flowering season dark purple berries form as fruits. The
underground part of the plant is a white tuber which can
be eaten and it is said to taste like cucumber.
