Saffron Crocus
Saffron Crocus Crocus sativus is a purple-flowered
crocus that blooms in the fall rather than in the
spring. Its pistils are the source of saffron which is
used as a yellow dye and as a flavouring in food. The
plant known as Autumn Crocus (Colchicum) which yields
the drug colchicine, is not a crocus but a member of
the Lily Family. Although the flowers look similar,
the Autumn Crocus has six stamens, whereas the true
crocus has three.
