Family Juncaceae
Rushes (species of Juncus and Luzula) might be mistaken
for grasses. They have long thin grass-like leaves and
heads of small greenish or brown wind-pollinated
flowers. There are about 350 species around the world
mostly growing in cool climates. Rushes are used to
make mats and chair seats and the pith from the centre of
the stems was once used in rushlight wicks for oil
lamps and candles.
