Date Palm
Date Palm Phoenix dactylifera has been cultivated in
the Middle East for thousands of years. Its simple
trunk ringed with scars of old leaf-bases grows to 30
metres and is crowned with shiny feathery leaves, each
about 5 metres in length. Clusters of male and female
flowers develop on separate trees. One female tree can
yield 250 kilograms of dates each year for more than a
hundred years. Date palms are now grown in many
warm parts of the world.
