Flowering Plant Groups
Angiosperms fall into two major groups, the
dicotyledons which have two "seed leaves" and the
monocotyledons which have just one. In a germinating bean,
which is a dicotyledon, you can see the two fleshy seed
leaves emerging from the seed coat. Monocotyledons have
a simpler flower structure than most dicotyledons which
indicates that monocotyledons are the more advanced group.
Over the ages, flowers have been evolving towards
greater simplicity.
