White Elm
White Elm Ulmus americana was a very popular shade tree in North
America until Dutch Elm Disease caused such devastation. The tree has a
distinctive shape with a tall straight trunk and graceful vase-shaped crown.
The leaves are simple and oval-shaped with pointed tips and toothed margins.
The flowers which have both stamens and pistils (perfect) appear in the
spring and produce little winged fruits that are dispersed by the wind. Elm
trees provide a useful wood which is bendable and makes good hockey sticks. MORE!
