Stems of Beechdrops Beechdrops Epifagus virginiana is a parasite. It has no green pigment (chlorophyll) and so does not make its own food but instead gets nutrients from the roots of other plants. The name "Epifagus" means "on Beech" and this plant grows under beech trees. The stems are branched and a brownish colour and the leaves are reduced to little scales. The small flowers are shaped like snapdragon flowers. [CH] {GW}
