Beechdrops
Beechdrops Epifagus virginiana is a parasite. It has
no green pigment (chlorophyll) and so does not make its
own food but instead gets nutrients from the roots of
other plants. The name "Epifagus" means "on Beech"
and this plant grows under beech trees. The stems are
branched and a brownish colour and the leaves are reduced
to little scales. The small flowers are shaped like
snapdragon flowers.
