Striped Maple Acer pensylvanicum is a shrub or small tree that grows under larger trees in mixed woodlands. It is easily recognised from its striped stems and surprisingly large leaves that are not really a typical maple shape. Maybe the large leaves make the best use of reduced light conditions that are found in the shade of other forest trees. [CH] {NT}
