Staghorn Sumac
Staghorn Sumac Rhus typhina is a shrub or small tree which is common
in the southern part of Ontario. It gets its name from the appearance of
its branches that look something like the horns of a stag and are coated
with velvety hairs. The large leaves are divided into many pairs of
leaflets and they turn red in the fall. Small flowers grow in large,
greenish-yellow clusters in June and July. A refreshing drink can be made
from the berry-like fruits which form upright, dark-red, cone-shaped
masses.
