Mountain Maple flowers and leaves Mountain Maple Acer spicatum is a shrub or small tree that grows by swamps and along rocky ridges in damp soil. Its opposite leaves have three main lobes with two smaller lobes at the stalk end. Its small greenish flowers grow in long-stalked clusters in early summer.
