Family Viscaceae
The Mistletoe Family (Viscaceae) includes the plant that some people like
to hang in their houses (and kiss beneath) at Christmas time. Mistletoe was
an important symbol in pre-Christian religions and folklore. There are many
different species of mistletoe belonging to several genera including
Phoradendron and Arceuthobium. Mistletoes are parasitic on
trees. Some species make a little of their own food and some take all their
nutrients from the host tree. Some authorities include Viscaceae in the
family Loranthaceae.
