Willow
Willow Salix is a very large genus with about 500
species, most of them
growing in the northern hemisphere. Willows often
form thickets, each plant
producing several stems near ground level. Most
species have narrow
pointed leaves with finely-toothed margins. Some
willows are used to make
baskets, as the stems are strong and flexible. The
tough lightweight wood
is also used for such items as artificial limbs and
cricket bats.
Identification of species can be difficult as
members of this genus form
hybrids quite easily.
