Cherry Prunus belongs to the same genus as the plum P. domestica, peach P. persica, apricot P. armeniaca and almond P. amygdalus. The name Prunus comes from the Latin word for plum and the familiar "prune" is a dried plum. All these trees produce fruits known as drupes which have a single seed (or sometimes several seeds) in a hard case that is surrounded by a thick and often juicy flesh. [CH] {FW}
