May-apple
May-apple, Mandrake Podophyllum peltatum grows in moist open areas
in the woods. It has large umbrella-like leaves which are divided just
above the stalk into several segments. Single white waxy flowers grow out
from points on the stem where two leaf stalks are joined. The yellow
lemon-like fruit can be eaten but the seeds and other parts of the plant are
poisonous.
