Genus Piper
This genus is comprized of about 1000 - 2000 species in four genera found in tropical
regions. The species are mostly shrubs, woody vines, and small tress. Many are used in
medicines and in food and beverages as spices and seasonings.
The strong flavour of Piper peppers is attributed to chavicine, a resin.
