Order Papaverales

Bleeding Heart and Poppy flowers The Poppy Order (Papaverales) is grouped with the fairly primitive Angiosperms and is probably the most highly-evolved order in this group. It is likely that Papaverales evolved from the ancestors of the Buttercups (Ranunculales). Some plants in this order produce a chemical, a kind of alkaloid, that discourages animals from eating them. There are two families in this Order, the Poppy Family (Papaveraceae) and the Fumitory or Bleeding Heart Family (Fumariaceae). [CH] {EN}
