Fragrant Water-lily
Fragrant Water-lily Nymphaea odorata is a beautiful white water-lily
that can be seen floating on ponds and in the quiet bays of lakes and rivers.
The Ojibway call it Anung pikobeesae (Star fallen in the water). Its roots
are anchored in the mud and long stems full of air spaces allow the flat
round leaves and many-petalled flowers to float on the surface. The flowers
are about 10 cm across and have a fragrant perfume. The Blue Lotus depicted
in ancient Egyptian art is a related species Nymphaea caerula.
