Pitcher Plant
Pitcher Plant Sarracenia purpurea grows in boggy
areas across North
America. Its Ojibway name is Mukukee odaussun which
means Frog's leggings.
The leaves are modified to form tubes which are
half-filled with fluid and
lined with downward-pointing hairs. Insects that
slip into these pitchers
are unable to get out and they drown in the water. The
leaf secretes enzymes
that digest the insects and provide the plant with the
nitrogen that it
needs. This pitcher plant has a deep-red nodding
flower with five petals and
five sepals.
