Basswood
Basswood Tilia americana is one of about twenty
species of Tilia. It is also called Linden, Lime or
Whitewood. Basswood is a tree that grows in mixed
hardwood forests. The leaf is about 10cm wide with
toothed margins and it is shaped like a lopsided heart.
The fragrant flowers are creamy yellow and they are
clustered at the end of long stalks attached to the
midrib of a narrow leaf-like structure. The fruits hang
like little balls from this long papery leaf. The soft wood
is popular for hand-carving.
