Subclass Dicotyledoneae
As the name suggests a dicotyledon seed has two seed
leaves or cotyledons. These seed leaves store food for
the developing embryo and look quite different from the
first true leaves. The two halves of a peanut are the
cotyledons and the embryo is the tiny structure seen
where the seed leaves are hinged together. Most of
the higher plant species are dicotyledons. They range in
size from big trees to tiny herbs.
