Black Walnut Juglans nigra is a North American tree which can grow to 30 metres in height. It has very long leaves that are divided into separate leaflets along a central stalk. Male and female flowers grow in separate clusters on the same tree and the female flowers develop into round fruits about 5 cm across, which are fleshy on the outside with a woody-coated edible nut inside. A toxic substance is released from the roots which may kill other plants around the tree. The wood of this tree is valuable for decorative veneers. [CH] {NT}
