Salal
Salal Gaultheria shallon grows abundantly in the coastal forests of
western North America. It is a shrub with tough evergreen leaves and
flowers like pinkish hanging bells. The fruits are black berries which are
eaten by animals and were once used by coastal Indian people to make cakes
and syrups.
