Arbutus
Arbutus Arbutus menziesii has the distinction of being the only
native broad-leaved tree in Canada that is an evergreen. Its glossy leaves
shed water and so are protected to some extent from being coated with ice.
It is a fairly small tree that grows on the Pacific coast on rocky ground
near the sea. Its orange-red trunks with peeling bark are easy to pick out
along the shore. The berry-like fruits of Arbutus are orange-red when ripe.
