Teddy Bear Cholla
Teddy Bear Cholla Opuntia bigelovii is not as cuddly as its name
suggests. It is a shrubby little cactus that looks as furry as a teddy
bear. It is armed with sharp spines and the stems grow in short thick joints
that break off easily and stick on to any unfortunate passer-by. These pieces
can grow into new plants. Prickles are very useful to a cactus; how many
prickly advantages can you think of?
