Saguaro Flowers

A shallow rooting system spreads over a wide area to allow the Saguaro to suck up all the available water when it rains and then the outside skin expands. As the water is used up the skin contracts into pleats which can open out again when more water arrives. The Saguaro can live for a couple of years without a drop of water. Saguaro flowers are waxy white with yellow stamens in the centre and the pulpy fruits are edible. [CH] {CA}
