Organ-pipe Cactus
Organ-pipe Cactus Lemaireocereus thurberi is a large plant of the
Sonoran Desert which covers part of southern Arizona and northern Mexico. It
grows to about 6 metres high and the short stem branches close to the ground.
The branches grow up straight without branching again so the plant looks a
bit like a mass of organ pipes. Its greenish-white flowers open at night and
they develop into sweet juicy fruits which the Mexicans call "pitahaya
dulce".
