Subfamily Lobelioideae

Red flowers of Lobelia Many flowers in the Lobelia Subfamily have a distinctive shape with their five petals arranged in two lips, the lower one of three lobes and the upper one split into two narrow upward-pointing "ears". The five stamens are joined together in a tube around the style of the flower. Some authorities put Lobelias in a Family of their own (Lobeliaceae) but they are closely related to species in the Bluebell Family (Campanulaceae). [CH] {MV}
