The Hawkweed Story
The hawkweeds and related species have a peculiar
method of reproduction in which seeds are produced
without a sexual fusion of pollen and ovules (apomixis).
This means that an individual plant reproduces its
genes exactly and when random changes occur in its
genes (mutations) they are passed on to the offspring of
that plant which are then different from all other plants
in the species. When the differences are sufficiently
obvious botanists recognise a new species. MORE!
