Sensitive Fern
It is hard to guess how Sensitive Fern Onoclea sensibilis got its
name as it has tough leathery leaves that can grow in the full sun in a
sufficiently wet area. The leaf shape is not particularly fernlike with
pairs of undivided leaflets along the frond. Fertile fronds look completely
different and they remain standing on stiff stalks after the sterile leaves
have died down at the first frost. The sporing heads are green at first
turning dark brown and persisting until the next growing season.
