Sporangia
Ferns in this family produce spores in spore cases
(sporangia) which are
clustered in fruitdots or "sori" on the under-surfaces
of the fertile
fronds. All the spores are of one type (homosporous). A
germinating spore
grows into a small heart-shaped prothallus and male and
female sex organs
develop on its underside. Sperm cells swim in the soil
moisture to the
female organs and new fern plants grow up from the
fertilised egg cells.
