Phylum Tracheophyta
Plant life that began in the sea gradually evolved
into species that could live on land. Some like the mosses
remained small but others developed an interior plumbing
system and rigid supporting tissues that allowed them to
grow much bigger. The woody tissue of trees and capillary
tubes for transporting water and sugars makes it possible
for trees to reach a great size. Plants that have conducting tubes (tracheae) are known
as Tracheophytes and
here you see a section through a Tracheophyte stem.
