Quillwort spores develop in spore cases (sporangia) at the bases of leaves (sporophylls) and quillworts win the prize for having the largest sporangia known. Different species of Isoetes are identified by the shape and structure of their female spores (megaspores). This picture shows a section through a female sporophyll with its megaspores. [CH] {FG}
