Green Algal Species
Some green algae are single
cells like Chlamydomonas
which may swim about actively
using little hair-like cilia.
Other species are chains of
cells like Spirogyra shown at left, colonies
like Volvox or many-celled
plants like the stoneworts.
A few species thrive in dry
exposed conditions protected
against drying out by fungal
threads. This combination of
a fungus and an alga forms a
lichen.
