Peat Moss
Sphagnum plants have spreading branches that are
clustered more densely at
the tips of the stems. The progression from a shallow
lake to a bog is
largely due to the growth of Sphagnum which forms a
thick floating mat.
This provides a place for other plants to grow and
gradually the water
becomes a quaking bog. Peat Mosses have an enormous
capacity for absorbing
water so they made excellent diapers for early North
American babies. They
also make good packing for fresh-cut flowers as they
help to retain
moisture.
