The soft bodied polyp animal secretes calcium carbonate which creates a hard external skeleton that provides protection. This photograph features hard coral polyps. When the animal dies this hard skeleton remains to form part of a reef. Many plants and animals are dependent on coral reefs for survival. Coral reefs are part of a complex ecosystem. [BM] {PH}
