Mud turtles are occasionally seen basking in the sun, however they spend the majority of the time in the water. The underside of the turtle is called the plastron and is generally quite hard, like the plates forming the shell. The plastron in the mud and musk turtle is greatly reduced. The musk turtle, which is also commonly called a stinkpot, emits a foul smell when lifted from the water. [BM] {FW}
