Surfperch are unique as they bear their young live and the young are sexually mature almost from birth. In fact the act of copulation occurs only 2 days after they are born, the males appearing to be sexually mature from birth, the females following soon after. Of the 25 species of surfperch most live off the Pacific coast of North America. They range in size from 13 to 45 cm. They are predominantly silver with dark markings on the back. [BM] {FW}
